Directive 2006/42/EC is a revised v ersion of the Machinery Directive, the first version of which was adopted in 1989. The Directive has the dual aim of harmonising the health and safety requirements applicable to machinery on the basis of a high level of protection of health and safety, while ensuring the free circulation of machinery on the EU market.

These Harmonised standards provide a presumption of conformity with the essential health and safety requirements (EHSRs) of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (see below for definitions of Harmonised Standard and Machinery Directive). On 2 April 2020, the European Commission published an updated list of the European harmonized standards that pertain to the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). The standards on this list may be used by machinery manufacturers to prove that their machinery complies with the essential requirements of this directive. Harmonised Standards are divided into three categories: A, B and C. Basic safety standards (type A). These fundamental standards give basic concepts, principles for design, and general aspects that can be applied to machinery; The type A standard ISO 12100 specifies the principle strategy for safety of machinery. Risk assessmentand adequate risk reduction by an iterative three-step method are the imperative measures to design a machine to achieve a level of tolerable risk. Although IEC 61508 is referenced by other IEC and ISO standards, it is not a harmonized standard, so compliance with IEC 61508 does not provide a “presumption of conformity” to the Machinery Directive. This subsector comprises six CEN technical bodies A considerable proportion of the deliverables are harmonized standards that give presumption of conformity to the safety requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and mainly because of this status, they are widely used by the industry, market surveillance or conformity assessments bodies.
