The paper explores ways to bring the approaches of J. Habermas and M. Foucault into a productive dialogue. In particular, it argues that Habermas's concept of deliberative democracy can and should be complemented by a strategic analysis of the state as it is found in Foucault's studies of governmentality. Habermas boldly exclaims Foucault’s “theory of power has shown itself to be a dead end” (Habermas 1990, 296). This is a relatively interesting argument to make, and the assertions that ground it in the prior lecture are quite compelling (Habermas 1990, 268). Foucault, Habermas and Evaluation[1] STEPHEN KEMMIS Deakin University, Australia ABSTRACT Educational evaluation may be understood in terms of what Michel Foucault describes as 'discursive practice', yet this perspective may lead to a kind of despair if evaluation technologies are seen as no more than an expression of 'the will to power'. differently. (You might also think of what Foucault says in Care of the Self about Greco-Roman sexual ethics being given a Christian spin while the associated prohibitions don't change.) One last note about the Foucault/Habermas comparison: for Habermas, colonization is a bad thing, a pathological thing.

Freedom is formed out of habit, according to Foucault, and it does not exist where power is absent. In this paper I give an account of Habermas's critique of Foucault, a critique which operates on three levels-methodology, empirical descnptions, and political implications. I also make some commentaries on the critique, where I propose that Habermas and Foucault work within different ensembles of theories, concepts and discourses. > in Habermas' thought, I do have a feeling that if my understanding of your use > of "colonization" is adequate, then something other than a discourse > overcoming another discourse is at work in both Marx and Foucault.

Foucault and Habermas share, that most political judgments are, if not arbitrary, then at least insusceptible to any final justification by appeal to a foundational principle. The difference between Foucault and Habermas is that it seems as if, on Foucault’s terms, all political judgments must Taken together, the works of Jürgen Habermas and Michel Foucault highlight an essential tension in modernity. This is the tension between the normative and the real, between what should be done and what is actually done.
